“Ten Percent of Our Gifts Are From India” In 2004, John L. Bryant, Jr., gave $10 million to establish the John L. and Laura W. Bryant Foundation, with which he was involved for nearly two decades. The John L. and Laura W. Bryant Foundation was initially established in the Dallas area, where Bryant had served as chairman of HCA, a hospital operator. However, it soon grew to encompass a broad range of philanthropic activities, including education, the arts, the environment, health care and child welfare, and public service. It is now a multi-million dollar grant-making foundation. The Foundation’s “Ten Percent of Our Gifts Are From India” initiative is aimed at educating Americans about India’s role in the global economy. Bryant emphasizes that this “mutual benefit is sustainable only if we continue to grow our economies and businesses with partners in India,” and that this growth is possible only if the U.S. is open to trade and economic growth with India. According to Bryant, the “Ten Percent of Our Gifts Are From India” initiative was begun in response to “outrageous claims that there is no economic contribution from India, there is no trade from India to the U.S., there is no exchange of ideas, culture, goods or services with India, there is no new growth in the U.S. from growing our trade with India, and the only impact that India has on the U.S. is positive in the sense that India’s products are cheaper than products from the U.S.” Bryant holds that India does have a positive impact on the U.S. and that it should be credited for these contributions. Bryant’s “Ten Percent of Our Gifts Are From India” initiative has included, for example, meetings between representatives of the private sector and academic institutions in the U.S., public discussions and lectures on India’s contributions to the U.S., and scholarship competitions for students and researchers in the U.S. About 300 universities and research centers have participated in the “Ten Percent of Our Gifts Are From India” initiative. In April 2011, the John L. and Laura W. Bryant Foundation released
